The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) extends its revolutionary greetings and heartfelt congratulations to the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSatu) as it celebrates an extraordinary milestone – 40 years of unwavering commitment, sacrifice, and service to the working class of our country.
This 40th anniversary is not merely a marker of time passed; it is a reflection of the struggles fought, the victories earned, and the countless lives that have been transformed under the banner of this mighty federation. COSatu has, over the decades, been the torchbearer of workers’ rights, a voice for the voiceless, and a shield for the downtrodden. From the dark and oppressive days of apartheid to the challenging present, COSATU has remained rooted in the values of worker solidarity, equality, and social justice.
For POPCRU, this celebration evokes a deep sense of pride and solidarity. We recall the lessons learnt under COSATU’s leadership: that unity is not an option but a necessity; that the fight for workers’ rights is inseparable from the struggle for a better and more humane society; that victories are won not only through marches and strikes but also through consistent organisation, negotiation, and principled leadership. COSATU has been our teacher, our comrade, and our ally – inspiring us to remain steadfast even in the face of adversity.
Over the years, COSATU has shown that it is possible to be both a fierce critic of injustice and a constructive partner in building a democratic South Africa. It has taught us that collective bargaining is a tool to uplift the working class, that social dialogue is essential in shaping progressive policies, and that the labour movement must always stand as a bulwark against exploitation and inequality.
As we celebrate these 40 years, we also reflect on the road ahead. The challenges faced by workers today are complex and evolving – from the casualisation of labour to deepening inequality, from technological disruptions to the scourge of corruption and austerity measures that erode our hard-won gains. In the next 40 years, COSATU must continue to adapt, to revitalise its structures, and to deepen its connection with the shop floor.
It must nurture young worker leaders who will carry forward the legacy and ensure that its voice remains not only loud but transformative in shaping the future of work and the future of our nation.
POPCRU stands shoulder to shoulder with COSATU in recommitting to the vision of a just, equal, and prosperous South Africa. We pledge our continued support to this federation, not only in times of celebration but in the daily grind of defending workers against exploitation, in mobilising for better wages and working conditions, and in shaping policies that put people before profit.
May this 40th anniversary be both a celebration of the past and a clarion call for the future. Let it inspire us all to redouble our efforts in building a stronger, more united, and militant COSATU – one that will lead the working class with courage and conviction for the next 40 years and beyond.
Forward to 40 more years of struggle and victory!
